Client: The Franklin Institute
Category: Educational materials
Role: Design
Science in the Summer™, supported by GSK in collaboration with The Franklin Institute, is a free summer program for children entering grades 2-6. The goal of the program is to increase children’s interest and confidence in science and pursuing STEM careers, especially for children from backgrounds currently underrepresented in STEM fields.
I worked with the Creative Services department of the Franklin Institute to design a suite of educational materials for the Be a Physicist! program. These materials included an educator guide, lab notebooks in English and Spanish, and graphics for TFI’s website.

Be a Physicist!
The 2023 Be a Physicist! program invites children to play the role of physicists and discover the importance of physicists to fields as varied as accident investigation, laser science, material science, power plant engineering, and sound engineering. The sessions encourage students to practice scientific techniques and explore basic principles of physics as they solve real-world problems by doing hands-on experiments.

Lab Notebooks
Lab Notebooks are provided to students to record their observations and reflections during their science explorations. The sample of notebooks below are for the Accident Investigator, Laser Scientist, and Power Plant Engineer.

Educator Guides
Educator Guides are provided to teachers to help their students explore each research project for each type of physicist. The sample below is for the Sound Engineer.
